End of Feb. 1943 | Left San Antonio, Texas, on to New Jersey, and then New York. |
March 5, 1943 | Left for overseas duty to fight in the war in North Africa. Sailed for fifteen days on the ship "Santa Paula" and landed in Oran, Africa. |
April 25, 1943 | Easter Sunday. Went to Constantine, Algeria. |
June 7, 1943 | Took prisoners back to Oran, Algeria. |
June 17, 1943 | On to Algiers, Algeria. |
July 5, 1943 | Left Zeralda, Algeria on the "USS Barnet" for the invasion of Sicily. |
Oct. 29, 1943 | Crossed the Straits of Messina and then drove through Italy to Salerno, then moved on to Pompeii, Naples, Marcianise, and Caserta. |
Feb. 23, 1944 | Went by LST (Landing Ship Tank) to Anzio, Italy |
Aug. 25, 1944 | Landed in Southern France at St. Tropez. Moved on to Grenoble, Lons le Saunier, Bernachon, Vesoul, Epinal, and Sarrebourg. |
March 20, 1945 | Left France and on to Germany - when through Zweibrucken, Kaiserslautern, Noris, Bensheim, Darmstadt, Aschaffenburg, Lohr, and Wurzburg. Got hurt in Rothenburg, near Nuremburg, and was flown to Verdun, France on April 23, 1945, and the next day to the 99th General Hospital in Cherbourg, France. |
June 16, 1945 | Left France on the ship "USS Washington". |
July 5, 1945 | Arrived in New York. Twenty eight months after leaving New York - two years and four months fighting the enemy before he got home to his family. |
After his discharge from the Army, Al married Margaret Skarda, who wrote him faithfully all the time he was away. They were married for 55 years.
