Dallas W. Donscheski, 77, Elba, Nebraska Dallas Donscheski was born in Nebraska on May 7, 1943. He lived in Cotesfield, Nebraska, when he joined the Army Reserves, 295th Ordnance Company in Grand Island, Nebraska, at the age of 19. Specialist 5 Donscheski mobilized for the Vietnam War as part of the 295th Ordnance Company in 1968. Dallas served in Vietnam from October 1968 until October 1969 as part of the 295th Ordnance near DaNang on Hill 63 called “Old Baldy,” or LZ Baldy. The unit’s primary mission included supplying ammunition to units operating in the area. During his deployment, Specialist 5 Donscheski received the Bronze Star with “V” device for exposing himself to enemy fire to put out a fire at an ammunition storage bunker, thereby preventing the entire storage facility from exploding. Specialist 5 Donscheski returned to the United States in October 1969 and was discharged from military service in December 1969. His most vivid memory of the war is the day his good friend was killed during an enemy mortar attack.
