It was a blessing in my life to join the United States Navy in 1966. I was honored to be a plankowner on the commissioning of the USS Cleveland LPD 7 in 1966. We were deployed to Vietnam in 1967 as part of the amphibious group serving in the adjacent waters to Vietnam. During this deployment we were active in all amphibious operations including supply and transport of the US Marines. I served on the Cleveland as a seaman and also Boatswain Mate 3. During our deployment I was attached to Assault Group 13. Following that tour of duty I was reassigned to the USS Duluth LPD 6, which included responsibilities similar to the Cleveland.
The main task was handling and moving supplies, including Agent Orange, ammunition and Marines. I worked as a bow hook man, supply handler, gunner, and occasional coxswain. We performed operations on both the Perfume and Cua Viet River, up to Dong Ha and Hue from November, 1967 to February, 1968. This unit gave sustained meritorious contribution to the cause of Republic of Vietnam in both direct combat and supporting roles. We participated in frontal beach assault during operations Ballistic Arch and Fortress Attack. These assaults were accomplished during predawn and in the dark, under the ever-present threat of enemy forces and during poor prevailing weather conditions associated with the North East Weather Monsoon.
My service decorations include: National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross Medal Color w/palm), Vietnam Service Medal 2 Clusters, and Vietnam Campaign Medal 2 Clusters.
Being a veteran allowed me to participate in the GI Bill of Rights and afforded me a college education, which changed the trajectory of my life. Additionally, in my later y ears, I have received benefits from the veterans for service-related medical conditions and impairments. It has also been a privilege for me to volunteer my services at the Omaha VA hospital. I am honored to have served my country.
