Ken Self, USMC

Kenneth (Ken) Paul Self age 72 was born on October 10th, 1952, in Omaha, NE to Floyd and Kathryn (Pavich) Self. Ken joined the United States Marine Corp in 1970 after graduation, he started serving active duty from August 27th 1970 through August 26th 1974. Ken did Reserves from August 27th 1974 through March 25th 1976. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant E5. Ken was a part of the Ordinance Maintenance Battalion, he was stationed out of Okinawa, Japan during Vietnam. Ken and Bonnie met at her birthday party in April of 1977. Little did they know they would be married a year later on May 6, 1978. On October 16, 1978, Ken had the honor of joining the Omaha Fire Department. He proudly served the Omaha community for 28 and half years and retired as a Captain in 2007. Ken was also a part of the Gretna Marine Corp League, and the Gretna American Legion. Ken was a great leader in life. He mentored young recruits at a Marine Corp Camp, influenced and changed the lives of many fire fighters, and was a great role model to his kids. He was loved by many and will be forever missed.

Ken passed away on December 25th, 2024. He leaves behind his loving wife Bonnie of 46 years, four children, Colleen(Russ) Eddy, Jake(Ashley) Self, Chelsea(George) Tanguy, and Zach(Amanda) Self. He also leaves behind 6 grandkids and many great family and friends.
