Nelson WC Lampe, ARMY

Award of the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device

Date of Action: March 18, 1969

Specialist Five Lampe distinguished himself by heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force on March 18, 1969 while serving as a loader with Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while conducting a reconnaissance operation, the company made contact with a large enemy force. In the early moments of the engagement, the commander of one of the tanks was wounded by grenade fragments. Upon seeing the man collapse, Specialist Lampe dismounted his tank and ran to aid the wounded soldier. Disregarding the hostile fusillade, Specialist Lampe stayed with the casualty until medics arrived and evacuated him. Specialist Lampe then assumed command of the tank and maneuvered it into position to continue the assault on the enemy emplacements. During his firefight his vehicle accounted for four of the enemy killed. Specialist Five Lampe's courage, devotion to duty and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldier were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
