Stan was born and raised in Omaha, NE. He joined the US Naval Reserve as a young man. On Dec 7, 1941 he was called up to active duty. He served for the duration of the war rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He participated in the invasion of Italy, serving on PT boats. After the war he served on the Omaha Fire Department for 20 years.
