Dean enlisted in the US navy in 1966, the year he graduated from high school. He served on the USS Cleveland, an LST landing craft as a 3rd Class Gunners Mate. The Cleveland served in the Viet Nam theater. Dean escorted Marines up the Kwaviet River and then returned them to the ship. After serving on several other ships, he mustered out of the Navy in 1970.
