George was born and raised in Vermont and graduated from the University of Vermont. While in college, George joined the Navy Reserves and attended Navy OCS in order to be commissioned as an officer in the Navy after graduating from the University. George was stationed aboard the USS Lofberg (DD-759), which saw action giving support fire to ground troops in Vietnam.
