A letter from Tom Brown
Senator Bob Kerrey reminded us we have limited time to remember and thank the Nebraska Veterans who came home from Vietnam, and we owe great debts to those who did not. The war was a defining moment for all of them and our country.
It was amazing to share the screening of The Greatest Beer Run Ever with you, Sen. Kerrey, and others who came out in support of the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Chickie Donohue’s beer run is a nearly unbelievable story about friendship, tenacity, patriotism, and human connections made in awful war situations. Chickie’s story took us back 55 years to a time of service and sacrifice. It was a story worth telling and a story worth hearing.
As Peter Farrelly and Andrew Muscato shared, this was a one-of-a-kind story, and it was fascinating to hear how they brought it to the big screen.
The Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial project is working to tell the stories of Nebraska veterans in big and small ways. The big display at the Memorial shows visitors the war’s history, beginning to end. The small ways keep alive the individual stories told by veterans, their families, and friends to be accessed by family, friends, students, and historians.
Here is how you can support the project:
- Your gifts will help us complete the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial : Donate | NVVM (nvvmf.org)
- Your stories will expand our understanding of the Vietnam War. Technology has enabled us to record and preserve these stories uniquely. Learn how to share your story here. Share Your Story
We give our thanks to Senator Bob Kerrey and Secretary Chuck Hagel, who both serve on the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial Honorary Committee and made this screening happen, as well as film director Peter Farrelly, and co-producer Andrew Muscato for bringing this story to the screen. Thank you, Bill Murray for joining us in Nebraska! And, of course, we thank Chickie Donohue for taking on this adventure to show his care and appreciation for his friends who were serving in Vietnam.
Thank you to Aksarben Cinemas for the extraordinary reception and bringing our guests a wonderful movie experience and to DJ’s Dugout for hosting a fun and engaging after-party!
Thank you for sharing in this experience and supporting the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Sincerely,
Tom Brown, NVVMF Board of Directors President
