Hal graduated from Omaha, Nebraska Benson High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, his law degree from University of Nebraska and served as a Captain, U.S. Army Infantry, Platoon Leader and Company Commander.
Hal has received numerous awards and citations, including: Distinguished Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver Award in Scouting, and Citizen of the Year in 2003, Omaha Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame in 2004, Humanitarian Award by the Grand Masonic Lodge of Nebraska, 2004, Communication and Leadership Award from Toastmasters International, 2005. More recently, Hal served as Chair of the Salvation Army “Be a Hero” luncheon, is Tree of Lights Chairman and as a capital campaign chairman for Madonna School. He was a member of the Advisory Board of Grace University.
Hal is a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2503, American Legion Post 112, “40 & 8” American Legion, Reserve Officers Association, and the Air Force Association.
Hal has three children and five grandchildren. He is married to the former Mary Mernin of Arapahoe, Nebraska.
