Combat Apple was a top-secret mission of the United States Air Force from August 17, 1967 until the fall of Saigon in 1975. The mission was conducted by the 6990th Security Squadron based at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa and the 6924th Security Squadron based at Da Nang Air Force Base, Viet Nam. Airmen from the 6990th flew in RC-135s (pictured above) and gathered intelligence while circling in the Gulf of Tonkin. The port of Hai Phong could be seen on these flights. Airmen from the 6924th flew in RC-130s in pattern in the gulf closer to the DMZ. Prior to the August 1967 date both these airborne missions and ground interceptions were conducted by the 6924th.
I consider myself the first Airman of the 6990th SS. There were NCOs and Officers present at Kadena before August 17, 1967, but by some stroke of luck I was the first airman to be there. I was only on the ground at Da Nang for about five weeks; three weeks in July and two weeks in November of 1967. Both times TDY to the 6924th. I believe the top photo was taken after the 100th mission out of Kadena. The gentleman second from the left in the back row is Frank Yuhas, a member of the Vietnamese language class. The RC-135s are still flown and can be routinely seen taking off and landing at Offutt Air Force Base. ~anonymous
