Larry K. Wakeley

Larry was born on December 10, 1948, in Wausa, Nebraska. He attended Wausa Public Schools, graduating in 1967. Following his graduation, Larry volunteered for the draft in November 1967 and underwent basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington.

In October 1968, Larry began his tour of duty in Vietnam, serving with distinction until October 1969. He was stationed at Camp Eagle Base near Hue, Vietnam, where he served as a squad leader in the I Corps, 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry. Throughout his military career, Larry achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, E-6, and received honors for his dedication to his mission and his fellow servicemen. These honors include the Combat Infantryman Badge, recognizing his direct engagement with enemy forces. Additionally, Larry was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star, and Vietnam Service Medal for his exemplary service during a tumultuous period of conflict.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Larry pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. He married Marcia (Nelson) and returned to Wausa, where they embarked on a journey of farming and operating a dairy operation. Together, they raised three daughters and built a strong family foundation.

In later years, Larry and Marcia ventured into entrepreneurship, owning and operating a Sears dealer store and service business in Yankton, South Dakota. Presently residing in Lincoln, Nebraska, Larry remains active in both work and community engagements. He drives trucks while also dedicating time to attending various activities of his seven grandchildren.

Larry's commitment to service extends beyond his military tenure, as he actively participates in community memorial services and has contributed to organizations such as the Masonic Lodge, Seostris Shriners, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). His life exemplifies the values of courage, sacrifice, and dedication to country and community.
