Thomas E. Love, Sr.
Tom joined the Army in 1940, before the United States became officially involved in WWII. After the United States became embroiled in the new World War, Tom’s unit was involved in the Battle of Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, North Africa in February 1943, only a short 3 months after the untested and inexperienced American troops landed in North Africa. The green American troops, facing battle-hardened German forces did not fare well in this 1st Battle of Kasserine Pass. During this battle, Tom was wounded and became a Prisoner of War (POW). Tom and his fellow American POWs that were captured at Kasserine Pass were initially taken to Italy and then finally to Germany, where they would remain until they were released through a prisoner exchange after the war in Europe had concluded in 1945.
